JoKa  (1982)
JoKa
<Show my your smiley face> 2007, Acrylic on canvas 14" x 9" (22.9 x 35.6cm)

If you were to delve into only the medium that JoKa chooses to work in, you’d find a rich history of neo-impressionist, divisionism and pointillism.  Synonymous with artists such as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, where choice in medium is the only similarity, JoKa’s subject matter is cutting and sarcastic.  His images demand the viewer to peer in to get a closer look only to find that the nearer they get the farther they become from the actual image.  His work becomes blurry as you near noting that his work is best viewed with distance.  Almost directing the viewer to where and how they should see the work.

Take for example his work,  “Show me your smiley face”; his choice to use a contemporary photographic close up point of view of a child in face play.  Or is it a child at all and is he at play or are we to assume this even to the point of if it’s a male or female.  Matched with classical wallpaper pattern only enhances the viewing point of the subject.  We believe there is play involved or at the very least implied via the title and replacement of pupils with smiley faces.
